Week 4!!

This week is the halfway point in our training! We ran 3.7 miles yesterday...it was amazing.
My grandma called me last night to tell me that she reads the blog, and she has always known that I run like a penguin…Thanks for the heads up G!

In other news, I had a mini fundraiser at Continuum this morning and the response was amazing. The setup harkened back to my days of peddling Girl Scout cookies. I had some awesome hand made signs and what not, but let me tell you those brownies are on to something: cute kids + thin mints = how could you not donate?

But seriously, it is so great to have support from my coworkers, and I am so proud to represent such and awesome cause!! I heard bunch of stories about how different types of cancer have affected the lives of the people I work with and I am so glad that I can do something small to help.

I also found out that I will be doing the last two weeks of my training in China, which is pretty awesome! And I will be back in the states the night before the race. I can’t wait!

Thank you so much to this week’s donors:

Week 3

We are finally hitting our stride! After a busy week of celebrating Allison’s birthday and watching her obsess over finals, it was great to get up early on Sunday and run my little heart out. We realized that our coach has been lying too us, every run we go on is really .2 miles more than she says it is. That means that I ran 3.2 miles this morning, officially the longest I have ever run! I am still slow, but starting to over come my penguin like tendencies!

Our Patient Ambassador, Lori, is amazing. She is a Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor and can run circles around me. She inspires me to get up and hit the road every morning!

Week 2

Recap of week one: We kicked butt. Allison and I enjoyed the gorgeous weekend on Long Island. We ran sprints and stairs at Al’s old high school on Friday, cross trained at the gym on Saturday, and ran 2 miles on Sunday. It was great to mix things up a little bit, but being back at home really works for me. Currently our route is boring but super functional. We mapped out a 1 mile loop around the park by our house and just keep running it. I personally love the consistency. I listen to the same songs on my ipod every run and try to beat where I was on the loop yesterday. It is working great so far. (I think Al is bored to death though).

I have to admit that being a new runner is so satisfying. I am slow, and sore, and exhausted, but every time I run I beat my old record. It is an awesome feeling. We ran 2.5 miles with our team this morning and it was awesome!! We also got fitted for new shoes which was a really cool experience. Apparently I have a natural gait, but run like a penguin!! Who knew?

Week One:

Those of you who know us, know that Allison and I are ridiculously busy. We had been going to the gym regularly until a year ago when we moved. Since then we have worked some insane hours, Allison has been in grad school full time, and I have been traveling a lot. Needless to say, we are out of shape..big time. So training has been pretty intense.

Our schedule is pretty straight forward, and looks easy on paper:

M: Rest
T: 1 mile at goal 5 mile pace
W: 30 min cross training
Th: 1.5 mile run
F: Sprints and Stairs
Sa: 40 min cross training
Su: 2 mile run

Our goal is to finish the 5 miler in under an hour. We used mapmyrun.com to find an easy 1 mile loop around our neighborhood and took off on our first run. After a year of being less than super active we did pretty well. Allison ran a 13 minute mile and I ran 16. Our subsequent runs were much better. We are improving every day, even running in torrential down pour. At the end of the week my best mile was 14:14! I am not sure if I have ever run faster than a 15 minute mile so I am pretty excited.

We have been at a loss for how to cross train, so any suggestions would be great! My cross training activity this week was bailing out the basement…I am pretty sure that is not what they had in mind.

We are in NY for the weekend so we are going to hit Allison’s old high school for sprints and stairs this afternoon. I am pretty excited, running bleachers reminds me of my volleyball days! Then tomorrow we should be running with our team, but we will run here instead.

On top of training we are doing a complete food overhaul. We are eating a ton of fruits and veggies, beans and rice, and drinking vats of water. We have cut out most of the olive oil and salt out of our food and I trying not to eat processed food. We are eating and drinking water constantly and have a TON of energy!

As far as fund raising is going we are kicking butt!! We are at 33%!!

Y’all keep us running! It is such an honor for us to be able to support such an amazing organization. We are running for a number of family members who have been affected by blood diseases. We are also running for our honored teammate Lori, who is the same age as Allison and I. Leukemia and Lymphoma can affect anyone! If you want to show your support please donate here:

(you can donate to either one of us or the team the money all goes to team Allison & Beth and to the LLS)
